Blepharoplasty/ Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that can be perfomed on the upper or lower eyelids to improve the aesthetic appearance. In some cases, eyelid surgery can also be corrective as it can relieve some functional deficits such as visual field loss. Changes of the skin and tissue of the area surrounding our eyes can result in a tired and aged appearance. The thin skin in the periorbital region is prone to fine lines, puffiness, and dark circles. Eyelid surgery serves to reduce the appearance of facial aging in this very important aesthetic area of the face.

The Procedure

During the surgery, incisions are made in the natural contours around the upper and lower eyelids in order to achieve a barely perceptible scar once the area heals. Excess skin and a small amount of excess fat may be removed. Some fat may also be redistributed in the eyelids to fill in areas of volume loss and reduce areas of puffiness. This surgery can be performed as an office based procedure under local anesthesia, or at a surgery center or hospital under IV sedation or general anesthesia. Laser treatments and Botox® can be used as an adjunct to achieve optimal results.

The Recovery

Patients tend to recover quite well following this surgical procedure. Some bruising, mild irritation, and swelling are expected. Activity restrictions are essential following eyelid surgery to reduce the risk of bleeding and postoperative complications. Pain medication, an antibiotic, and eye ointments are prescribed postoperatively.
