Gynecomastia refers to enlarged breasts in men that typically stem from an increased amount of breast gland tissue. This can occur as a result of several factors, including hormone changes, medications, or aging. Enlarged or asymmetrical breasts can result in lowered self-confidence. For men looking for a long-lasting solution, gynecomastia surgery may be an excellent option to achieve a desired aesthetic and, as a result, restore confidence and well-being. For some, this procedure can also relieve physical discomfort or difficulty fitting into clothing. In consultation with Dr. Aya-ay, patients can determine whether gynecomastia surgery is the procedure best suited to their needs.
What is Gynecomastia Surgery?
Gynecomastia surgery, also known as male breast reduction, is a procedure that minimizes the size of breast tissue in men. This procedure is surgical in nature and may include liposuction, depending on the needs of the patient. As gynecomastia is a common condition, this procedure is a popular choice to address excess fat and tissue in the breast area to promote comfort and confidence.

The surgical approach for gynecomastia will be customized depending on how much excess tissue, skin and fat that the patient has. Most cases involve a small periareolar incision to directly excise the firm larger area of dense tissue behind the nipple areola. In many cases liposuction is incorporated to remove excess surrounding tissue and shape the area. In this case, several small incisions will be made and a special cannula will be inserted to remove fat. Occasionally larger incisions may be needed to remove significant excess tissue and skin. These surgeries are done under general anesthesia at the hospital or surgery center and the patient is able to go home that day.
Gynecomastia Surgery Recovery and Aftercare
Gynecomastia surgery is typically an outpatient procedure, so patients are normally able to return home on the same day. Travel arrangements should be made beforehand due to the use of general anesthetic. Patients can expect to have a supportive garment and/or bandages around the affected area that serve to provide support and minimize swelling. Pain medication may be prescribed to ease discomfort during the healing process. Typically, drains may be placed in order to prevent the buildup of excess fluid during recovery. Dr. Aya-ay and her staff will review the postoperative instructions with you at your consultation and again at your preoperative visit to ensure that you are comfortable with your postoperative care.
