Brachioplasty (Arm Lift)

BOOK NOW

Brachioplasty, also known as an arm lift, is an option for patients who are dissatisfied with the appearance of their upper arms. As we age, our skin can begin to sag, resulting in a drooping appearance. These effects can also emerge after significant weight loss. An arm lift is a potential solution that results in a more firm, youthful appearance of the upper arms, diminishing the “drooping” effect and producing a more sculpted look. In consultation with Dr. Aya-ay, patients can determine whether brachioplasty is the procedure best suited to their needs.

What is Brachioplasty?

Brachioplasty is a procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the upper arm area. Dr. Aya-ay incorporates liposuction of the upper arm in this technique. This surgical cosmetic procedure is often used after a patient has lost a significant amount of weight and has excess sagging skin on the arms. It also can be used to combat the effects of aging, as aging and genetics can certainly play a major part in the loss of skin elasticity and the development of sagging skin.

During the procedure, the skin is tightened on the arms to reveal a more aesthetic and toned upper arm shape. A scar will remain on the inner part of the upper arms, which will improve with scar cream and time. The length of the scar depends on the degree of laxity.

Brachioplasty Procedure

A brachioplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia. Standard tumescent liposuction techniques are performed. The surgeon will then excise the excess fat and skin. After skin, tissue, and fat are removed, the surgeon will stitch the arm together for a new, tightened appearance.

Brachioplasty Recovery and Aftercare

Patients will need to wear a compression garment to combat swelling of the upper arm area. A drainage tube may also be used to drain any excess fluid that can build up after surgery. Additional instructions will be given by Dr. Aya-ay that explain how to treat the incision area, side effects to look out for, follow-up appointments, and medications.

Patients can generally return to work within two weeks of the surgical cosmetic procedure. Normal activity levels can usually be performed within six weeks. Dr. Aya-ay and her staff will review the postoperative instructions with you at your consultation and again at your preoperative visit to ensure that you are comfortable with your postoperative care.

What is the average recovery time for an arm lift procedure?

The average recovery time for an arm lift procedure is about six weeks. After two weeks, you’ll be able to return to work, but it will likely take six weeks before you can return to your normal activity level.

Can an arm lift be combined with other body contouring surgeries?

Absolutely! An arm lift can be combined with liposuction, tummy tuck, fat grafting, or be part of a mommy makeover.

How long do the results of a brachioplasty typically last?

The results of a brachioplasty are long-lasting but do rely on following a healthy lifestyle. Aging and weight fluctuations can also affect your results.

What type of anesthesia is used during an arm lift surgery?

A brachioplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia.

Are there non-surgical alternatives to brachioplasty for arm contouring?

Morpheus 8 is a good nonsurgical alternative to an arm lift. It can tighten and firm the skin, giving you a more contoured appearance.

How soon after massive weight loss can I undergo an arm lift?

We generally recommend waiting 6-12 months after massive weight loss before undergoing an arm lift. You want to make sure you are at a stable weight before having any cosmetic surgery, as weight loss and weight gain can affect your results.

What are the potential complications associated with arm lift surgery?

Some of the potential complications associated with an arm lift include scarring, infection, bleeding, nerve damage, and swelling.

Will an arm lift affect my ability to exercise or lift weights?

An arm lift will temporarily affect your ability to exercise or lift weights. Four to six weeks after surgery, you will likely be able to perform some light activities, and after 6-8 weeks, you should be able to go back to your normal level of exercise.

How visible are the scars from an arm lift procedure?

Any scarring will be on the inner arm to ensure it’s as hidden as possible. In the first few weeks after surgery, the scar will likely be red and more noticeable, but as time goes on, it will fade. Following your aftercare instructions can help ensure any scarring is as invisible as possible.

What's the difference between traditional brachioplasty and mini arm lift?

The main difference between a traditional brachioplasty and a mini arm lift is the amount of tissue removed and the size of the incisions. With a traditional arm lift, more excess skin and fat are removed and the incision runs from the armpit to the elbow, whereas a mini arm lift removes less skin and fat and the incision is much smaller.
