What is Breast Reduction?
A reduction mammoplasty, also known as a breast reduction, is a procedure that is used to reduce the volume and size of the breasts. The breast skin is tailored, and the nipple and areola are elevated to provide a more youthful breast shape. Large breasts, or macromastia, can cause symptoms such as neck and back pain, shoulder strap grooving, postural problems, and rashes. A breast reduction will often result in improvement if not resolution of these symptoms.

Breast Reduction Procedure
There are different techniques that may be used for breast reduction. In most cases, an incision is made around the areola, from the areola to the inframammary fold or crease, and then along the inframammary crease. Skin and excess breast tissue are removed, the nipple and areola are elevated, and the areola is often downsized. The breast is then reshaped. In general, patient satisfaction is very high with this procedure because it not only improves or eliminates the patient’s symptoms, but also corrects the sagging of the breasts and creates a more aesthetic breast shape.

Breast Reduction Recovery and Aftercare
During the recovery period, the patient will have activity limitations in order to decrease the risk of postoperative complications. The patient will have a dressing in place and either an ace wrap bandage or a surgical bra. There will be sutures in place that require suture removal. Postoperative medications may include an antibiotic, pain medication, and anti-nausea medication to be used as needed. Dr. Aya-ay and her staff will review the postoperative instructions with you at your consultation and again at your preoperative visit to ensure that you are comfortable with your postoperative care.
