Liposuction

BOOK NOW

Liposuction is a body-sculpting procedure designed to remove localized deposits of fat and sculpt a more aesthetic and proportional body shape. It is routinely performed on multiple areas of the body including the jowl and neck, upper arms, abdomen, back, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, axillary rolls and lateral chest. For optimal results, candidates should be at or very near their ideal body weight, as liposuction is not a weight loss procedure.

Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction is typically performed under general anesthesia for maximal patient comfort. Small localized areas such as the submental neck area may be treated with local anesthesia with or without oral sedation. Several small incisions are made, and cannulas are used to remove the fat. Dr. Aya-ay utilizes the PAL (Power Assist Liposuction) with SAFE Lipo technique which consists of Separation, Aspiration and Fat Equalization.  This technique helps to minimize asymmetries and contour irregularities. A single suture is used to close each small incision. In some cases of high-volume liposuction, drains are placed to aid in the healing process.

Liposuction Recovery and Aftercare

The recovery period will depend on the extent of the procedure and the areas that are treated. The patient can expect to experience temporary bruising and swelling in all treated areas. Pain medication, antibiotics, and nausea medication are prescribed as needed. A compression garment is worn postoperatively for a few weeks to decrease swelling and to help to contour the area. Lymphatic drainage massage will be performed to help reduce swelling, smooth tissue and improve outcomes.  Activity and work restrictions will be in place for a period of time following the surgery in order to allow for healing and to reduce the risks of postoperative complications. Dr. Aya-ay and her staff will review the postoperative instructions with you at your consultation and again at your preoperative visit to ensure that you are comfortable with your postoperative care.

What areas of the body can be treated with liposuction?

Liposuction can treat many areas of the body where stubborn fat tends to accumulate, including but not limited to the abdomen, flanks, thighs, hips, buttocks, upper arms, back, chin and neck, chest, axillary tail and knees.

Am I a good candidate for liposuction?

You may be a good candidate for liposuction if you are close to your ideal weight but have localized fat deposits that resist diet and exercise. Ideal candidates should also have good skin elasticity and muscle tone, be in overall good health, and have realistic expectations about the results. It is important to remember that liposuction is not a weight-loss solution but is ideal for body contouring.

How long does a liposuction procedure typically take?

The length of a liposuction procedure depends on the areas being treated and the amount of fat being removed. Most procedures last between 1 to 3 hours. Larger or multiple areas may take longer.

What type of anesthesia is used during liposuction?

Liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia (for small areas), IV sedation, or general anesthesia. Ultimately, the choice of anesthesia depends on the extent of the procedure.

How much fat can be safely removed during a liposuction procedure?

The amount of fat that can be safely removed during liposuction is typically around 5 liters (11 pounds). This can vary based on the patient’s health and the surgeon's judgment. Removing larger amounts increases the risk of complications.

What is the recovery time after liposuction?

Recovery varies depending on the extent of the procedure and the individual. Generally, most patients can return to light activity within a few days. Full recovery and resumption of strenuous activities usually take 4 to 6 weeks.

Are the results of liposuction permanent?

The fat cells removed during liposuction are permanently gone. However, if you gain weight after the procedure, fat may reaccumulate in the surgical site or increase in other areas of the body. Maintaining a stable weight through a healthy diet and regular exercise is essential to preserving the results.

What are the potential risks and complications of liposuction?

As with any surgical procedure, there are some possible risks associated with liposuction. These may include:rn•tInfectionrn•tBruising and swellingrn•tScarring or irregularities in skin contourrn•tSeroma or fluid accumulationrn•tChanges in skin sensation (numbness or hypersensitivity)rn•tFat or air embolism (rare but serious)rn•tReaction to anesthesia

Can liposuction be combined with other cosmetic procedures?

Yes, liposuction is often combined with other procedures, such as tummy tuck, mommy makeover, breast augmentation or reduction, facelift, and more. To learn more about which procedures liposuction can be combined with, please contact our Tampa, FL, office today.

How soon will I see the results after liposuction?

You may see some initial improvement immediately after the procedure, but the final results typically take several months to appear. Swelling will gradually subside over 3 to 6 months, revealing the full outcome.
